What to know about microdosing for managing weight loss.

What is microdosing?

In general terms, microdosing is just what the word suggests – it is taking a very small amount of a medication, compared to the standard prescribed dose, with a microdose commonly being 5 to 10% of the normal prescribed dose. The term and practice of microdosing originated in modern times with psychedelics, going back to the 60s and 70s. There has been a surge of interest in the practice in recent times, with claims that it can result in long-term general health and wellbeing benefits, with minimal acute effects. However, because of legal and certain stigmas attached to the substances being used, many of the claims are more anecdotal, with little formal research or empirical data available.
In addition to psychedelics, microdosing has also become a growing research area for other mainstream drugs as well, treating things such as depression, anxiety, autoimmune diseases and more. It is often done in pre-trials to see if a drug shows the viability to warrant the time and expense of further clinical research and trials. The goal is to reduce the resources spent on non-viable drugs as well as the amount of testing done on animals. Besides research, microdosing is now used in many traditional therapies as well. The main point of microdosing is to be able to still get some of the benefits of a particular drug, while potentially mitigating, or eliminating any negative side effects that may come with a standard full dose.

What about semaglutide?

Just about everyone has heard of semaglutide by now, especially if you are aware of weight loss programs and possible solutions to weight gain and weight management. And if you don’t know what semaglutide is, then you most likely know it by the names it is marketed under, such as Wegovy®, Ozempic® or Rybelsus®. At Riize Health, we offer the same weight loss drug as a “semaglutide” oral dissolving strip.

Semaglutide is in a class of drugs known as GLP-1 medications. The attention given GLP-1 drugs has exploded in recent years due to their effectiveness in supporting weight loss. Semaglutide works by mimicking a natural gut hormone, called GLP-1, which is responsible for regulating blood sugar and appetite. By stimulating the GLP-1 receptors in the brain, semaglutide reduces food cravings, creates a feeling of fullness and slows digestion, ultimately supporting weight loss. GLP-1 drugs, like semaglutide, have completely changed the game for weight loss, with a proven efficacy that is greater than anything available up to now.

As if the weight loss demand for GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide was not enough, a mid-stage study, conducted in July, 2024, found that these medications may also slow cognitive decline. Other research has also found possible positive benefits for nicotine cravings and heart disease.

Complete weight control

Weight loss and lasting weight management is a multi-faceted journey. Semaglutide and microdosing can be valuable tools, but need to be part of a plan that is made up of an overall healthy lifestyle. The most highly recommended things include:

  • A balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, proteins
  • Smaller, more frequent meals
  • Plenty of water and sleep
  • Limited alcohol, in any, and eliminating smoking
  • Regular exercise or physical activity of some sort
In addition to these basics, any weight control program should include professional medical consultation in working to do what’s right for you. When it comes to healthcare and weight loss, there is no one-size-fits-all. The most effective and lasting plans are those that are personalized to each individual’s current health and lifestyle situation.
Professional medical assessments and reviews are completely free through the Riize Health telemedicine platform. Everything can be done virtually and remotely, from the convenience of your home. Our licensed medical providers are available to give you a recommended course of action, and upon approval, the prescription necessary for an effective semaglutide regimen.

Semaglutide and microdosing

Along with the popularity of semaglutide at full strength, there is a growing trend of microdosing with semaglutide. It can make sense for those who want to gradually introduce themselves to a semaglutide regimen, or for those who have reached a level of weight loss that they now want to maintain, with a lesser amount of the drug in their system.

With a standard prescription, a full-dose amount of semaglutide, is injected once a week. While its overall safety is well-established, many people still experience side effects, particularly gastrointestinal issues like nausea and diarrhea. This can discourage some people from continuing treatment, and may make microdosing an option worth considering.
For others, they may have been able to achieve a weight loss range or goal with the help of semaglutide, and would like to simply be able to maintain the weight without having to keep up full doses. Again, microdosing can be an option that allows them to get the continuing benefits of appetite and craving control, but with less impact on their system.
One of the potential problems with microdosing semaglutide has to do with the way it is traditionally administered as an injection. Microdosing with injections requires a compound prescription vial from which the person has to draw their own dosage amounts. This can create problems of inconsistency in the doses, potentially getting either too much, or not enough to be effective.
